Why & How to wear a turtleneck in 2021

If you ever considered wearing a turtleneck only during a weekend ski getaway or a holiday party, think again. This iconic piece of clothing is just as wearable in professional situations as in casual settings. And today I want to show you why you shouldn’t toss them out of your wardrobe and how to wear them in 2021! Here are some style tips to keep in mind, to ensure you’ll be wearing turtlenecks to work as a pro in no time.

First, you’ll want to think about the material of the turtleneck. If your turtleneck is destined for office wear, you’ll want to stick to a wool, silk, or cotton turtleneck. You don’t want the turtleneck’s fabric to be too heavy or chunky. Fuzzy, cable knit turtleneck sweaters are precisely what you want to wear at home in front of the fire, but for professional settings look for fabrics that are lighter and have a slight sheen. Turtlenecks made from a cotton-modal blend or even 100% silk are excellent for office wear for precisely this reason.

In short, the thinner the fabric the easier it is to wear it as a layer underneath other clothing garments. For example, wear it underneath a loose shirt and a blazer for a modern business / professional look. More on ways to wear it below.

The next qualification to consider is the cut. Is the turtleneck cut more loosely, or even in a tunic shape? The looser the cut, the more off-duty its look, save those tunic turtlenecks for the weekend. Also, look for turtlenecks that have full-length, or at least ¾ quarter length sleeves. Turtlenecks without sleeves fall on the more casual side of the spectrum and should be saved for off-duty wear unless your workplace is more casual.

Regarding the question of pattern, we have one simple rule: keep it solid. Solid turtlenecks will always appear more professional. However, if your workplace leans a bit more casual and you’re more pattern-inclined, look for something in a subtle, smaller-scale pattern like checks or stripes versus a pattern that is big, bold, or busy.

Next, you’ll want to plan what you would want to wear your turtleneck with. This is the area in which the turtleneck truly shines. It’s a remarkably versatile piece of clothing that can be paired with pencil/suit skirts, suit trousers, and also chino pants, slacks, or jeans alike.

While the common way to wear a turtleneck is by itself, one of my favorite classic moves is to pair it with a blazer.

For a more modern, contemporary take on business casual, match it to a solid-colored blazer in black, navy, or grey. For a more modern business look wear it under a loose button-down shirt.

There are a few other, more practical reasons for incorporating the turtleneck into your work wardrobe. One of those is that it makes an excellent “break in case of emergency” outfit. Imagine that you are wearing a fitted white blouse to work, and just before that big presentation you happen to spill a mug’s worth of piping hot coffee over it (this happens to most of us at some point in our lives). This is a tricky situation, but if you’ve stashed a ready-to-go turtleneck in a spare office drawer you’ve got an instant solution to your problem.

In addition, due to its knit quality, a turtleneck won’t wrinkle when folded like a shirt or blouse would. For this reason, the turtleneck is also one of my favorite things to pack during a work trip. And if you travel frequently enough, you can hardly pick a better piece of business clothing than the turtleneck. That’s why a turtleneck is a must in my business wardrobe, and I have it in different colours and fabrics, from thin to thick, to cover all seasons and occasions.

So how to wear your turtleneck in 2021? Apart from wearing it on its own, there are 3 simple ways to rock it:

♠️ Layer it with a loose button-down shirt (for a modern business look)

♠️ Wear it under a vest

♠️ Wear it under an oversized blazer/coat

Top 8 fashion trends for Summer 2021

Summer 2021 fashion trends were definitely something of a reply to current world events, featuring more restrained and less outrageous fashion. Here are the key 8 fashion trends to know this summer.

Black Face Masks, from now on, are definitely an integral part of everyday life and wardrobe, and an absolute favourite in the fashion world as they match almost any outfit you wear. Best to opt for a silky fabric for easier breathing or something with embellishments if feeling fancy. When it comes to protecting yourself, you may as well do it beautifully.

80s-inspired Oversized Boyfriend Jacket is not going anywhere any time soon. With the help of shoulder pads, this outerwear cinches in your waist, elongates your legs, and creates a long line silhouette, what is it not to love? Pair with leather shorts or straight-leg trousers for an ultra-modern style. Powder blue, charcoal or neutrals colours work best when trying to dress this up or down for an effortlessly chic look.

Candy tones from cherry to raspberry bring some rose-tinted energy to summer. Country Road collection has a particularly wide range of pink summer pieces this season.

All-white 1990s minimalism look is back in fashion, featuring luxurious materials and smooth lines. Also looks chic when paired with a black mask (new reality).

The low-rise pant made its comeback, introducing us to the new businesswoman, with extra sensuality. Corporate world are you ready for a reinvented office wear trend?

New Workwear wardrobe offers chic yet functional shades of beige and off-white with ultra graphic details like pockets, belts, or rivets.

Balloon sleeves were one of the most popular summer themes, as a continued infatuation with puffy and gathered shoulders.

Yellow & Blue Bags have taken over the runways and the streets. This timeless trend is easy to replicate with a small clutch, which can spice up your daily outfits. They look particularly good when paired with a monochromatic ensemble or other vibrant hues for a pop of colour.

  • 16 FASHION TRENDS TO WEAR IN SPRING 2020

16 FASHION TRENDS TO WEAR IN SPRING 2020

It’s official: Spring is here, which means it’s time to tackle the often-challenging seasonal wardrobe switch and say goodbye to your wool knits, fur-lined boots, and puffer jackets for the next seven plus months. As you step into spring, what do you need to know? The top spring 2020 trends of course! Which is why I put together a useful guide to what’s in season now. Knowledge is power, and with this trend update, you’ll be the most fashionable dresser in your friend group. It helps to know what the most popular looks are so you can prepare your shopping list in advance.

Want even more insider info? FOLLOW US on Instagram, where we provide SHOPCAST VIDEOS with shoppable links, so you can shop your favourite pieces before everyone else starts wearing them.

Here are the top trends to know for Spring 2020.

    KNIT DRESSES

A knit dress is a great piece to wear as a transition from winter into spring. It provides warmth underneath a leather jacket, but will keep you cool if you go with a short-sleeve or midi length option.

Dress it up with knee-high boots, for after-work rooftop drinks with your besties, or dress it down with sandals or white sneakers for a relaxed look.

POLKA DOTS Polka-Dot prints made waves on the Spring 2020 Runways. And you most likely have a polka dot dress hanging in your wardrobe right now, but this spring is the season to wear it on the daily. Here are my favourite polka dot prints editions from Dries Van Noten, Michael Kors, and Tommy Now, which elevated the classic print in new shapes and sizes.

    BUTTERY SOFT COLOURFUL LEATHER

This buttery leather (including vegan or faux) for sure is the one material everyone’s excited to experiment with in 2020. We typically reach for basic black or brown when it comes to leather goods. But Brognano, Fendi, and Rochas are encouraging you to follow their bright ideas to get colourful.

    HOT PANTS

Ready to bare your…butt cheeks? Then this trend is for you. Short shorts officially made a comeback this season on all major runways. These tiny-sized bottoms offer a fun vibe to your outfit, whether you rock it with a blouse, a knit top or sweater. Choose leather, satin, or denim pair, these hot pants will make your legs sizzle.

However, if you’re a pass on this trend and short shorts aren’t your choice, you might want to try Bermuda shorts instead (my personal favourite, below).

    BERMUDA SHORTS

It’s officially Bermuda shorts’ turn this year. That’s right, dig out your longer shorts at home because this spring (and summer!) they will be everywhere. That mid length will add a touch of sophistication and class to any warm-weather outfit. On the runways, Bermuda shorts came in all materials, from silk to leather and denim and styled with everything from tees, blouses, jumpers and blazers.

    WAISTCOAT

This garment definitely made a comeback on the spring 2020 runways. Whether you opt for a sexy tuxedo design that can be worn over a T-shirt as well as on bare skin, or a waistcoat over a blouse for an extra warmth layer, a waistcoat is the optimal layering piece. Wear it like you are back in the ’70s with Celine, or get dapper in a tailored three-piece like they did at Rag & Bone.

    CROCHET

Want to keep cool this spring season? Crochet is the answer. This vacation-vibes material isn’t just for beach cover-ups and sarongs anymore. Crochet is dominant at all Spring 2020 runways. You’ll find this fabric at most designer collections from Fendi’s all-over crochet set to Jonathan Simkai’s blue midi dress.

    BRALETTES UNDER BLAZERS

Bralette under a blazer trend is a big hit this season. As seen at Staud, Malene Birger and Jacquemus Valensole, and many others. Designers played with the idea of wearing this undergarment as outerwear this spring. The only way to wear a blazer this season is with a bralette (I mean for your off-duty days, of course!). While showing off your midriff, blazers still make you feel covered up. Opt for high-waisted bottoms for more coverage.

SIDE SLITS Side slits are more popular then ever for spring 2020. Bringing a whole new wave of sexiness to your skirts while keeping you cool when the temps start to rise. If more coverage desired, go up a size and layer tights underneath. Personally, I am in love with Brandon Maxwell and Marc Jacobs designs this season.

    SHEER IS HERE

I call it fashion for the brave! If you like wearing chiffon and tulle to create airy see-through looks, now’s the time to show off your prettiest bras, or even some braless skin. If your motto is ‘less is more’, here are some ideas from David Koma, Aigner and Fendi to incorporate in your spring outfits.

    SEQUINS DAY & NIGHT

Are you ready to shine? Designers like Saint Laurent, Naeem Khan and Ralph & Russo showing you how to sport sequins for both day and night. Whether you go with a sparkly gown or a shimmery suit set, prepare to stand out in your friend group.

    CORSETS

A corset is an easy way to emphasize one’s silhouette, as seen in all forms on the runway. Cinch in that waist with sheer bodies, traditional boning and other new styles to showcase your torso, no matter the dress code. And if you really want to support Australian designers I would recommend Dion Lee’s corsetry designs, my absolute favourite.

    WHITE SUITS

Embrace the new cool slouchy versions of a white suit and incorporate them into your daily wear. Get elegant with an oversized blazer trouser suit from Proenza Schouler or get posh with Victoria Beckham’s modern tuxedo.

    COLLAR NECKLACES

Singular statement pieces are in to crown your collarbone this season. Think oversized chains, oversized seashells, oversized chokers and oversized pearls. The chunkier the better as seen at Burberry, Christopher Esber, Lanvin and Giambattista Valli.

    BIG BAGS

It is finally time to retire from 2019’s micro bags that didn’t fit anything to begin with (Phew!). Think big, especially if you choose practicality over aesthetics. My favourite editions from Givenchy, Miu Miu, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford large enough to fit all of your life’s problems. They can probably even fit your dog.

    BOHO STYLE ROPE BELTS

The rope belt is officially in. This easy-to-wear accessory will seamlessly work with any outfit, as proven at Stella McCartney, Zimmermann and Valentino.
