  • Is a Capsule Wardrobe Right for You?

Is a Capsule Wardrobe Right for You?

You have probably heard about the capsule wardrobe concept at some point in your life. But what exactly is a capsule wardrobe, and why is everybody talking about it? And most importantly is a capsule wardrobe right for you?

A capsule wardrobe is a small selection of interchangeable clothing pieces that can be easily mixed and matched together, complementing each other. This is usually achieved by buying what are considered “key” or “staple” items in coordinating colours.

But is it right for you?

Well, that’s a good question. Before answering this for yourself, let me first debunk some common myths about capsule wardrobes and what they are not.

Myth #1: Capsule Wardrobes Are Too Limiting

Although originally derived from the concept of having only a few pieces to mix and match, the number of items in a capsule wardrobe can vary depending on your lifestyle and the amount of clothing you need for different areas of your life. A capsule wardrobe can have as many or as few clothes as work for you. There is no golden number of pieces to have in your capsule wardrobe. You can have 7 pieces, 27 pieces, or even 37 pieces. As long as it suits both your style and lifestyle, you can build an efficient capsule wardrobe based on your needs.

Myth #2: Capsule Wardrobes Are Boring

On the contrary, capsule wardrobes promote creativity. They allow you to be more creative with your outfits since all your versatile pieces can be mixed and matched, enabling you to create many different looks with just a few items.

For example, take a basic blue shirt: you can dress it up with a tailored skirt and heels for a professional look, or dress it down with jeans and kitten heels or flats for a smart-casual look, or with jeans and sneakers for a casual look. Having a few versatile pieces can be fun and inspiring once you begin playing with how you mix and match them.

Myth #3: Capsule Wardrobes Are Only for Minimalists

People often think you must get rid of everything in your wardrobe and only have a few essential pieces in plain colours to have a capsule wardrobe. But it does not have to be so drastic. If you love prints and patterns, there’s no reason why you cannot have printed pieces in your capsule wardrobe, as long as you choose prints and patterns that combine well with other pieces.

For example, you could add animal print garments that fit in and gel nicely with the black and brown pieces you already have.

Myth #4: Capsule Wardrobes Have to Be Neutral and Classic

A capsule wardrobe can look different for everyone. And it certainly doesn’t have to be all  classic blazers, white T-shirts, and black pants. You can introduce more colour and more styles into it, as long as the garments in your capsule wardrobe are interchangeable and work well together. If your capsule wardrobe differs from those standard classic images you see online, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for you; it just means it works for your individual style and life.

For example, if you like wearing colour, you can still create a capsule wardrobe that is colourful and fun, or go for a creative or romantic look—whatever your personal style is. Having a capsule wardrobe is simply a way to streamline your wardrobe and style.

Myth #5: Capsule Wardrobes Are Expensive

You do not need to spend a lot of money to look good. You just need to know what works for you and have a good selection of clothes that suit your lifestyle and budget. I recommend investing in the best quality pieces (within your budget) that last for years, to avoid constantly replacing cheaply made fast fashion pieces that fall apart after a few wears. In short, you are buying quality rather than quantity. Buy less but better!

Now that I’ve dispelled these common myths for you, do you think a capsule wardrobe is for you? Do you want to know how to create it? • How To Wear Your Summer Dresses in Autumn/Winter?

How To Wear Your Summer Dresses in Autumn/Winter?

Can summer dresses be worn in Autumn/Winter? – Absolutely!

There’s no need to say goodbye to all your summer dresses and tuck them into the back of your wardrobe. Instead, find new ways to repurpose them and wear them during the colder Autumn/Winter months. With cozy layering pieces, such as fine knits and the right accessories, you can do just that and start wearing your summer dresses during colder and transitional seasons.

Here are 5 easy steps to wear your summer dresses in Autumn/Winter:

    1. Find a thin, long-sleeved knit in a matching colour to your dress.
    2. Layer it underneath your dress. I love using turtlenecks (in different colours) as layering pieces.
    3. Pair your summer dress with tights in a colour that matches or complements your dress.
    4. Add your favourite pair of boots in a colour that matches your overall outfit palette.
    5. Finish off with your favourite belt or other accessory that complements your outfit.
Here are some examples of summer dress layering

And, of course, remember to swap your accessories (e.g. bags, belts etc) to alter the look and vibe of your outfit to suit the occasion.

    BEFORE & AFTER

Using these layering tips above will completely change the look and feel of your dress (see BEFORE & AFTER layering photos above). It is a versatile way of wearing your dress to work, day to day, or even for date nights. Perfect on a chilly autumn or winter night when you need an extra-long sleeve layer to stay warm.

Now, think about how you can use layering to repurpose and wear your summer dresses in Autumn/Winter. Have a question or comment? Drop it below👇.

How to wear a striped top in 2024

The striped top never goes out of fashion and is a must-have staple in everyone’s wardrobe. But how can you wear a striped top in 2024 for a modern look and remain stylish every day?

One of my favourite ways to create a chic office look with a striped top is described in detail in this short

    video HERE.

To create a more casual and relaxed look (suitable for casual Fridays or weekends) pair your striped top with either blue jeans and a blazer in black or brown tones such as beige or camel, whichever suits your colour palette.

In terms of shoes, you can wear them either with a pair of loafers or ballet flats for a more dressed-up look, or a pair of clean white sneakers/converse sneakers for a more casual look. One thing is guaranteed: you will never look outdated wearing this classic striped top!!!

Another great way to wear this top is under a classic trench coat or a wool coat, when the weather calls for it.

Here, I have created a shop-board for you so you can now browse and shop all your favourite pieces HERE.
